Portable Weather Radios
A portable weather radio provides great versatility. Take it canoeing. Use it at your shelter-in-place location. Keep it with you when threating weather is expected. These devices typically have several power options like hand crank generators, replaceable alkaline batteries, rechargeble batteries, soloar power, and even A/C power. Multiple power options are critical because grid electricity is often unavailable during severe weather events (e.g., flooding, thunderstorms, ice storms) and non-weather related disasters (e.g., earthquakes) events. Remember, solar power cells may be useful for charging in good weather, but solar power is not an option during most severe weather events. Some portable radios with hand-crank generators also have the ability to charge mobile phones and devices. Many portable weather radios are designed to be on or off and are not weather "alert" radios. Portable weather radios without "alert" capability don't have the ability to remain silent until a severe weather "alert" is issued.
